Coleman Alberta Training

After winning the California Cowboys Association 1977 Reserve Champion Saddle Bronc Rider and then the 1980 Bull Riding Championship, I began training horses for outside clients.  My focus has always been in starting young colts. For the past thirty-five years, I concentrated on training, breeding and showing cutting horses.

For 20 years I trained horses for the Hearst family.  During this time and since my accomplishments include:

NRCHA Open Finalist at Caldwell, ID futurity

NRCHA Open Finalist Paso Robles, CA futurity

NCHA Reserve Champion Cowboy Classic Futurity

NCHA Open Finalist Ellensburg, WA futurity

3-time Open Champion Central Valley Cutting Horse Association

I have grown to appreciate that horses need to be treated as athletes.  The horse cannot perform successfully and withstand the pressure that many disciplines demand if they do not have a well-rounded training program.  By working outside of an arena, doing some of the everyday cattle ranch work with dogs, my horses have learned the discipline and patience that help them succeed in many events.  These horses are not as dependent on the rider for cues.  This make them solid horses that accommodate different riders.

While gathering cattle and working in the brush and rocks of these foothills, young horses have proven to be much more reactive when worked in a pen with cattle. I have successfully taken cutting horses out of the show pen, to roping events as heels horses the very same week, and back again.

My heroes and mentors were my father Joe Alberta, Ollie Ordway, Stanley Branco and the master horseman Greg Ward. After over 35 years training, I continue to raise and train outstanding performance horses from my ranch in Raymond, CA.
